Weather Alert
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting dust storms and thunderstorms in the upper parts of the country from May 16 to 19.
Additionally, the ongoing heatwave conditions are anticipated to intensify into a “severe heatwave” from May 23 to 27.
According to the PMD’s daily weather report, heatwave conditions are likely to emerge over most parts of Pakistan, particularly Punjab and Sindh, starting from May 21.
These conditions are expected to escalate to severe levels from May 23 to 27, with daytime temperatures soaring 04 to 08°C above normal across various regions.
The weather department has advised farmers to take necessary precautions to manage their crops, while urging the general public to minimize exposure to direct sunlight and utilize water judiciously.
Furthermore, the PMD has cautioned that extreme dry and heatwave conditions may increase the risk of bushfires and forest fires in vulnerable areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and northeast Balochistan.
In addition to the heatwave forecast, a shallow westerly wave is projected to affect the upper parts of Pakistan starting from the evening of May 16.
This weather system is expected to bring dust storms and thunderstorms to several cities in Balochistan, isolated rainfall in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and rain-wind and thunderstorms in regions of Gilgit Baltistan, Punjab, and Sindh.
The PMD provided specific forecasts for various regions:
- Balochistan: Duststorms and thunderstorms with isolated rain are expected in several cities from May 16 evening to 19.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Similar weather conditions are predicted in numerous cities from May 16 evening to 19.
- Gilgit Baltistan/Kashmir: Rain-wind and thunderstorms are forecasted in various areas from May 16 evening to 19.
- Punjab/Islamabad: Duststorms and thunderstorms with isolated rain are anticipated in several cities from May 16 evening to 18.
- Sindh: Duststorms and thunderstorms with isolated rain are expected in certain cities on May 17 and 18.
These weather forecasts highlight the importance of preparedness and precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks associated with the anticipated weather conditions.
