Three Heatwaves Expected to Strike Different Parts of Pakistan

Heatwaves

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning stating that Pakistan could face three heatwaves across different cities within the next 25 days.

According to the NDMA, the initial heatwave is anticipated to affect several cities in Sindh, including Umarkot, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Sanghar.

Additionally, Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan in south Punjab are also expected to experience heightened temperatures.

This first heatwave, projected to last for two to three days between May 15 and 30, may see temperatures reaching up to 40 °C, with potentially more intense heat sensations.

The NDMA further disclosed that the second heatwave is forecasted to last for four to five days, likely occurring in late May or early June, with temperatures possibly soaring up to 45 °C.

Moving forward, the third heatwave is anticipated during the initial 10 days of June, impacting regions including Tharparkar, Umarkot, Sanghar, Badin, and Khairpur.

Meanwhile, Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) had previously cautioned about escalating temperatures, signaling the onset of a heatwave in the province.

The PDMA highlighted an expected rise in temperatures by three to five °C between May 8 and 10. It also projected heavy rainfall in south Punjab from May 10 to 11, along with thunderstorms across most districts of Punjab.

In light of these weather predictions, PDMA Director General Irfan Kathia advised the public to remain vigilant. He emphasized that the impending heatwaves and heavy rains posed risks to various crops across the province.

Kathia assured that district administrations across Punjab were duly informed about the weather forecasts and urged proactive measures to mitigate potential damages.

These warnings underscore the significance of proactive disaster management strategies and public awareness to cope with the anticipated weather challenges in Pakistan.
