On Independence Day, Murree witnessed an overwhelming influx of tourists, with more than 53,000 vehicles entering the hill station despite its parking capacity being limited to just 5,000. The rush of visitors continued into Thursday, creating a significant challenge for traffic management.
According to a spokesperson for the City Traffic Police, although the total number of vehicles entering Murree has surpassed 53,000, many have left shortly after arrival, resulting in approximately 6,000 to 9,000 vehicles being present at any given time. To manage the heavy traffic, more than 200 traffic police personnel were deployed on duty during the celebrations.
Strict safety checks were carried out at entry points and checkpoints, including verification of driving licences. Motorcyclists without helmets were barred from entering, and single individuals were prohibited from accessing Mall Road on Independence Day. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Waseem Akhtar and Traffic Officer Murree Sohail Shahzad personally monitored the arrangements to ensure smooth movement.
Despite the large influx, all roads in Murree remained open, with traffic flowing smoothly in most areas. However, heavy pedestrian activity at GPO Chowk created unusual traffic pressure. Tourists were advised to park only in designated areas, avoid double lanes, and refrain from illegal parking. Awareness pamphlets were distributed to encourage compliance with traffic rules and safe travel practices.
Given the ongoing monsoon rains, the traffic police issued a special advisory for visitors. Public service vehicles entering Murree were required to present valid fitness certificates, and tourists were urged to travel in suitable vehicles, ensure wipers and lights were functional, avoid speeding on slippery roads and sharp turns, and strictly follow one-way traffic regulations.
The CTO emphasized that vehicles should not be parked on roadsides for photography, as it disrupts traffic flow. Tourists were reminded to cooperate with traffic wardens, whose role is essential in maintaining order, safety, and a pleasant travel experience in the popular hill station.
