Types of Coffee in Pakistan
Coffee culture in Pakistan has grown significantly over the past decade. From traditional styles to international brews, Pakistanis now enjoy a variety of coffee types at home, in cafes, and at specialty coffee shops. Below are the most popular types of coffee in Pakistan:
1. Instant Coffee
This is the most commonly consumed type of coffee in Pakistani households. Brands like Nescafé and Everyday are widely available. Instant coffee is made by adding a spoon of coffee granules to hot water or milk. It’s quick, affordable, and easy to prepare.
2. Desi Coffee (Beaten Coffee / Phitti Hui Coffee)
Also known as hand-beaten coffee, this is a homemade version made by vigorously beating instant coffee and sugar until frothy, then adding hot milk. It results in a creamy, foamy cup and is especially popular during winter.
3. Espresso
Espresso is served in many cafes and coffee shops in Pakistan. It’s a concentrated form of coffee served in small shots, often used as the base for other drinks like lattes and cappuccinos.
4. Cappuccino
A blend of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Cappuccino is one of the most ordered types of coffee in cafes such as Gloria Jean’s, Coffee Planet, and Second Cup.
5. Latte
Lattes are popular for their smooth, mild taste. They contain more milk than cappuccinos and are often customized with flavors like vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut.
6. Americano
An Americano is made by adding hot water to espresso, resulting in a lighter and less intense drink. It’s a common choice for those who prefer a less creamy but still rich coffee flavor.
7. Cold Coffee / Iced Coffee
A favorite in the summer months, cold coffee is typically blended with ice, milk, sugar, and instant coffee. Cafes also serve iced versions of lattes and mochas.
8. Mocha
Mocha is a sweet blend of espresso, chocolate, and milk. It’s ideal for those who enjoy coffee with a dessert-like flavor.
9. Turkish Coffee (Qahwa)
Although not as common as other types, Turkish-style coffee or Arabic Qahwa can be found in certain traditional restaurants and cafes. It’s strong, unfiltered, and often served with dates.
10. Filter Coffee / Brewed Coffee
With the rise of specialty coffee shops, brewed or filter coffee is gaining popularity. This includes French press, pour-over, siphon, and Chemex methods, mostly found in niche cafes.
