Fourteen people suffered injuries during a violent incident at a factory in central Japan on Friday. The attack involved multiple stabbings and the use of an unknown liquid spray. Emergency officials confirmed the incident occurred in Mishima city, located in Shizuoka prefecture. Authorities responded quickly after receiving distress calls from the site.
Violence of this nature remains uncommon in Japan. However, the incident has raised serious safety concerns. Local officials and police have launched a full investigation to determine what led to the attack.
Emergency Services Rush Victims to Hospitals
Emergency services received a call around 4:30 pm local time. A nearby rubber factory reported that several workers had been stabbed. Callers also reported that an unidentified spray-like liquid had been released during the incident. Firefighting official Tomoharu Sugiyama shared details with media.
According to Sugiyama, emergency teams transported all 14 victims to nearby hospitals. At least six injured individuals required multiple ambulances. Medical teams assessed the victims upon arrival. Officials have not yet confirmed the extent of the injuries. However, media reports stated that all victims remained conscious during transport.
Rescue teams secured the area to prevent further harm. Authorities then began collecting initial evidence from the scene.
Police Arrest Suspect on Attempted Murder Charges
Japanese media outlets, including public broadcaster NHK, reported that police arrested a man shortly after the attack. Authorities suspect him of attempted murder. Investigators have not yet released his identity. Police continue to question the suspect to understand his motive.
Officers also examined the liquid used during the incident. Officials have not confirmed its composition. Investigators aim to determine whether the substance posed additional health risks. Police presence around the factory remains heightened as a precaution.
Factory Linked to Major Tyre Manufacturer
The incident occurred at a factory operated by Yokohama Rubber Co. The company manufactures tyres for trucks and buses. Its corporate website confirms operations at the Mishima location. Company officials have not yet issued a detailed statement.
Local authorities continue to coordinate with factory management. They aim to ensure worker safety and restore order. The company may also review internal security measures following the attack.
Rare Violence Highlights Ongoing Security Concerns
Japan generally reports low crime rates. Strict gun laws and strong policing contribute to public safety. Still, isolated violent incidents do occur. The 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shocked the nation. More recently, courts sentenced a man to death for a 2023 shooting and stabbing spree that killed four people.
Earlier this year, prosecutors charged a man with attempted murder after a knife attack at a Tokyo metro station. These incidents continue to challenge Japanโs image of near-zero violent crime.
Authorities have assured the public that they will take firm action. Investigators will release further details as the case develops.
