Despite tight Israeli restrictions, approximately 100,000 Palestinians gathered at Al Aqsa Mosque for Friday prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. Security forces deployed heavily across occupied East Jerusalem, limiting access and maintaining strict control at key checkpoints.
Heavy Security and Restricted Access
Israeli authorities barred tens of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank from reaching East Jerusalem. Thousands of police officers were stationed at entrances, alleyways, and the outer gates of Al Aqsa Mosque. The army also reinforced West Bank checkpoints to further restrict access.
Thousands of worshippers gathered early at the Qalandia military checkpoint north of East Jerusalem, attempting to reach the mosque. Many were turned away despite arriving before dawn, as soldiers cited failure to meet strict pre-set conditions.
Attendance Lower Than Pre-War Levels
This weekโs attendance, while significant, remains lower than pre-war Ramadan Fridays, when over 150,000 Palestinians typically gathered at Al Aqsa. Last week, around 80,000 worshippers performed the first Friday prayer of Ramadan at the mosque. Current numbers reflect ongoing restrictions following Israelโs war on Gaza, which began on October 8, 2023.
Since the conflict started, Israel has imposed tight movement restrictions, allowing only limited numbers of Palestinians into East Jerusalem through army-issued permits, often difficult to obtain. Despite this, Muslims have continued to defy restrictions to attend weekly prayers.
Significance of Ramadan at Al Aqsa
Ramadan traditionally attracts hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank, filling Al Aqsa Mosque and surrounding areas. The gatherings not only hold spiritual significance but also boost commercial activity in Jerusalemโs markets.
This week, worshippers demonstrated resilience, attending prayers despite security constraints and military presence. The gatherings highlight the continued importance of Al Aqsa Mosque for Palestinians during the holy month.
Ongoing Challenges
Israeli authorities approved a plan at the start of Ramadan to limit entry to 10,000 Palestinians for Friday prayers throughout the month. Nevertheless, tens of thousands still attempted to reach Al Aqsa, showcasing both devotion and determination.
The combination of security restrictions and permit requirements has created ongoing tension, but Palestinians continue to maintain their religious traditions under challenging conditions.
